Recently, bassist P-Nut spoke to The Badger Herald about Bad Brains, Punisher War Journal and Shaq’s lyrical talents.īadger Herald: You use the credo “from chaos comes clarity” as seemingly the overall theme of your latest album. Germain, who, along with crafting From Chaos into the group’s most superior work to date, unified the often Nick Hexum-centric creative process. The past two records, Transistor and Soundsystem, allowed each member to stake a musical claim individually, with a post-production “assembling.” Both albums tanked, and 311’s future looked bleak. With the release of From Chaos this summer, the Los-Angeles-based, Omaha-bred, five-piece stepped back into studio “together” for the first time since 1995’s “self-titled” gem. A sonic stew with a watered-down stock of pop, heavy peppering of reggae and punk with just a sprinkling of hip hop, or more specifically “rhyming over beats,” that screams the aesthetics of Limp Bizkit with lyrics that fail to objectify the female form a la the mook-rock stalwarts. That's a way to keep it fresh." The writing credits on this 311 album will be the most complicated yet. "We'll sit in the control room and brainstorm and talk things out. " is like a sixth band member, as far as the writing," says Hexum. He describes one untitled track as a "crazy epic" that "actually quotes Bach and goes into this crazy math-metal outro with dual sweep arpeggio guitars."ģ11 reunited with producer Scott Ralston, who produced Transistor and "worked on a lot of our albums in some capacity, mixing or engineering," says Hexum.Īnd for the first time the songwriting is more collaborative, a shift influenced by Hexum's solo debut, which features co-writers on each track. Hexum added that after two decades together, the quintet had to experiment to hold their interest and avoid being "rote and routine." "Anything that sounded innovative and new is what we pursued," he says. There's definitely some retro sounding moments, too." There are a lot of harmonies and more rapping than there was on the previous record because that's what the riffs called for. "There are a lot of great rock riffs and Chad keeps mentioning that he wants it to be danceable, so that's what he's going for in his drum parts. "We've got a great new batch of songs written," Hexum tells Fuse.
